Science of Reading: Sight Words
Science of Reading: Sight Words// When we think of teaching sight words, we always go straight to the strategy of having our learners memorize them. And while students can learn to read by sight, the Science of Reading suggests otherwise- instead, Science of reading encourages learners to build their phonetic and phonemic awareness skills and uses them to tackle these “tricky” words.
Instead of memorizing, there is another way: teach sight words as phonetically as possible.
Today I am going to cover how I teach sight words using phonics and phoneme mapping, along with what to do when learners come across those inevitable “irregular” words.
This video on sight words can be for sight words in kindergarten, sight words for 1st grade and sight words for second grade. This video can also be related to frequency words or heart words. The sight words video talks about orthographic mapping or phoneme mapping and shows where you can get free flashcards.
